The point guard is often compared to a quarterback in football because of the specialized role of this position and also referred to as the one position.

The job of a point guard is essentially to run the offense by controlling the ball and making sure it gets to the right players.

A point guard is supposed to help find scoring opportunities and must be able to implement the coaches game plan on the floor.

Point guards must be aware of the clock time, scores, timeouts, etc. at all times. They are also expected to be vocal leaders.

If you posses these skill sets along with good ball handling then the point gaurd position may be for you.

A shooting guard is also known as the number two position on a basketball team.

A shooting guards main job is to score points for the team.

This is why you’ve probably noticed shooting guards in the past like Kobe Bryant that would take tons of shots.

It wasn’t because he was a ball hog but mainly because that was his primary role on the team.

Shooting guards can also be asked to bring the ball up court like point guards. When this happens the number two position can also be referred to as a combo guard.

The power forward is also referred to as the number four position.

The role of the power forward is similar to a center in size but usually is faster and possesses the ability to shoot from a further range.

On offense you may notice they usually play with their back towards the rim and on defense they play under the rim.

Even though Lebron James plays this position you may have noticed he isn’t of the norm in this position.

He has the ability to do everything on the court which you haven’t seen very often in the past with the number four position.

Center

The center is also known as the number five position on a basketball team.

The center is usually the tallest person on the team and is commonly referred to as the ‘big man’.

The center mainly focuses on using his/her size to block shots, take quit shots, get rebounds, and use their size against other players to open up opportunities for offensive scoring and defensive plays.

You’ve probably seen players in the past like Shaq and how he used his size to make plays on the court.

 The Last Shot:

So what basketball position am I anyway? A lot of times when your young and just starting out in the game of basketball coaches will put you in an area of play without assigning you a position.

This is common for youth basketball leagues and divisions because most coaches just want the kids to have fun and not put to much on the kids that can make understanding the game any harder.

This way kids can learn to love the game of basketball at a young age and learn more about the positions and fundamentals about the game as time goes on.

We hope this answered your question on what position you are and gave you a better understanding of each one.
